IB Mathematics Pathway

Most STEM-bound IB students in Ontario take Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) at Higher Level, earning both MHF4U and MCV4U Ontario credits.

Grade
Course
Focus & Ontario Credit
Grade 9
MTH1W (Pre-IB)
Accelerated pacing; core Grade 9 + intro to Grade 10 analytic geometry
Grade 10
MPM2D / MCR3U (Pre-IB Fast-Track)
Most IB schools cover Grade 10 + half/all of Grade 11 Functions by end of Grade 10
Grade 11
IB Math AA/AI Year 1 (SL or HL)
Earns MHF4U credit; advanced functions, limits, and sequences/series
Grade 12
IB Math AA/AI Year 2 (SL or HL)
Earns MCV4U credit (and MDM4U for HL); external exams in May

Analysis & Approaches (AA)

Recommended for STEM-bound students. Emphasizes algebraic manipulation, calculus, and rigorous mathematical reasoning. At HL, covers advanced functions, calculus, vectors, and statistics. Earns MHF4U + MCV4U (and MDM4U for HL).

Applications & Interpretation (AI)

Best for social sciences, business, and arts. Emphasizes mathematical modelling, statistics, and real-world applications using technology. Well-suited for students who want math with practical context.

IB Science Pathway

IB science courses in Group 4 emphasize inquiry, experimentation, and formal lab methodology alongside Ontario curriculum content.

Grade
Course
Focus
Grade 9-10
SNC1W → SNC2D (Pre-IB)
Heavier focus on formal lab report methodology and error analysis
Grade 11-12
Group 4 Science (SL: 1 yr, HL: 2 yrs)
Formal lab hours, internal assessment, external exam in May

IB Biology

SBI3U + SBI4U

SL:

Cell biology, genetics, ecology, human physiology

HL:

SL topics + neurobiology, advanced physiology, extended lab hours

IB Chemistry

SCH3U + SCH4U

SL:

Bonding, energetics, kinetics, organic chemistry

HL:

SL topics + reaction mechanisms, spectroscopic ID, deeper energetics

IB Physics

SPH3U + SPH4U

SL:

Mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electromagnetism

HL:

SL topics + wave phenomena, rotational dynamics, quantum physics

Important IB Considerations

IB has specific program requirements that affect course selection and scheduling.

The IB Two-Science Rule

Under standard IB Diploma regulations, students can choose a maximum of two experimental sciences from Group 4 (e.g., Chemistry + Physics, or Biology + Chemistry). If a university program strictly requires all three Grade 12 sciences, an IB student must apply for a formal 'non-diploma irregular condition' or take the third science via summer or night school.

Ontario Credit Equivalency

Ontario report cards list standard course codes (MCV4U, SCH4U, etc.). IB students receive percentage grades derived from the IBSO conversion scale, which are then converted to Ontario credits.

Internal Assessments (IA)

IB science and math courses require a substantial Internal Assessment - a student-designed investigation that contributes to the final grade. This is separate from Ontario lab activities.

Extended Essay (EE) & TOK

All IB Diploma students must complete a 4,000-word Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (TOK), in addition to their six subject courses. This requires strong time management.

Planning your post-secondary admissions? Be sure to verify university requirements for competitive Ontario university engineering, science, and business programs.

How IB Tutoring Works

01

Curriculum Alignment

We review your child's IB subject choices, current Ontario credit standing, and IA progress to build a targeted plan.

02

IB-Experienced Tutor

We connect you with a tutor who has taught or succeeded in IB Math and Science, familiar with markbands and examiner expectations.

03

Subject-Specific Sessions

Sessions cover Ontario curriculum, IB-specific content, IA guidance, and exam technique for each subject and level (SL/HL).

04

Exam & IA Readiness

Regular practice with past IB papers, IA feedback, and time management strategies ensure your child is fully prepared.

IB or AP?

Both pathways offer rigorous academic challenges. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right path for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

Analysis & Approaches (AA) focuses on calculus, algebra, and rigorous proof - ideal for STEM. Applications & Interpretation (AI) focuses on modelling, statistics, and real-world applications - ideal for social sciences, business, and arts.
HL is recommended for students pursuing science or engineering at university, as many competitive programs require or prefer HL science. SL is sufficient for students whose university path does not require deep science specialization.
Yes, some students take both. However, this requires careful scheduling since both programs have significant workloads. We recommend focusing on one pathway unless there is a clear academic reason to pursue both.
Most university programs in Ontario require only two Grade 12 sciences. However, students applying to competitive engineering or health science degrees should verify university requirements (explore our Ontario university admissions guide) and consult their guidance counsellor early.
The IA is an independent investigation contributing 20-25% of the final IB grade. Our tutors provide formative coaching on experimental methodology, data analysis, and report structure. In strict accordance with IB academic integrity guidelines, tutors never write, draft, or produce student submissions.
