How Ontario High School Final Grades Are Calculated
In every Ontario secondary school governed by the Ministry of Education, student assessment adheres to the mandatory framework set out in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools. Under this framework, 100% of your course grade is split into two distinct components:
Term Evaluation
Conducted across the semester through unit tests, quizzes, lab practicals, assignments, and presentations. Reflects the student's most consistent level of achievement.
Final Evaluation
Administered at or near the end of the course. Can be a 30% comprehensive written exam, or split (e.g. 20% exam + 10% Culminating Performance Task / project).

5 Rules to Maximize Marks in the Final 14 Days
1. Target the Thinking (T) & Application (A) Categories
Most students score 85%+ on Knowledge questions (basic formulas and definitions), but lose entire letter grades on Level 4 Thinking and Application problems. Practice multi-step problems that combine concepts from two different units (such as combining trigonometry with rational functions).
2. Review Past Unit Tests, Not Just Class Notes
Passive reading of teacher slides creates an illusion of competence. Gather your 4 to 6 marked unit tests from earlier in the semester. Re-solve every single problem where you lost marks without looking at the answer key.
3. Simulate Strict Timed Exam Conditions
A standard Ontario exam is 1.5 to 2 hours with 60 to 80 marks. That allows roughly 1.5 minutes per mark. Time yourself on practice exams so you do not freeze or run out of time on the final 15-mark word problem.
4. Memorize Key Formulas and Restrictions
In senior math courses like MCR3U and MHF4U, forgetting to state restrictions on denominators, extraneous roots in logarithmic equations, or quadrant signs in reciprocal trig identities costs 4 to 8 marks across the exam paper.
5. Lock in 1-on-1 Personalized Coaching
When you are stuck on a difficult physics mechanics problem or chemistry equilibrium ICE table, searching the web or watching videos can consume hours. A dedicated Ontario tutor diagnoses your exact gap in 10 minutes and guides you through the correct rubric solutions.
