MPM2DAcademic

Principles of Mathematics (Academic)

Target: Leads Pathway

MPM2D is the academic Grade 10 course and a prerequisite for MCR3U. It covers quadratic relations, analytic geometry, linear systems and trigonometry.

Core Topics & Curriculum Focus

•Linear Systems: Substitution, elimination, and real-world system modelling
•Analytic Geometry: Length and midpoint of line segments, equations of circles, geometric properties
•Quadratic Relations: Graphing parabolas, vertex form y = a(x - h)² + k, transformations
•Factoring: Common factoring, difference of squares, and factoring trinomials (simple and complex)
•Quadratic Equations: Solving by factoring and applying the Quadratic Formula
•Trigonometry: SOH CAH TOA, angle of elevation/depression, Sine Law, and Cosine Law

Support for Learning Gaps & Academic Enrichment

Whether your student needs patient remediation to rebuild lost confidence or advanced enrichment to stay ahead of the class, our tutors calibrate every session.

Targeted Learning Support

Targeted Coaching for Quadratics, Factoring & Trigonometry

Tutoring connects algebra to graphs and practical problems, with practice matched to the student's course and current unit:

  • ✓Eliminating factoring struggles through step-by-step decomposition and difference of squares methods
  • ✓Mastering parabola graphing: finding vertex (h, k), intercepts, step patterns, and sketching accurately
  • ✓Applying the Quadratic Formula confidently without arithmetic or radical simplification errors
  • ✓Deciding when to use SOH CAH TOA vs Sine Law vs Cosine Law in trigonometry questions
  • ✓Organizing multi-part analytic geometry proofs (verifying right triangles, parallelograms, and circles)
Academic Enrichment & Challenge

Advanced Quadratic Modelling & Grade 11 Functions Preparation

Students ready for extension can explore more demanding problems and prepare for their next math course:

  • ★Challenging quadratic optimization problems (maximum height, maximum revenue, boundary fencing)
  • ★Early preview of Grade 11 function notation f(x), domain and range, and parent functions
  • ★Waterloo Cayley Contest (Grade 10) coaching for advanced mathematical competition awards
  • ★Real-world engineering and architecture trigonometry triangulation projects

Frequently Asked Questions

Grade 10 Math Tutoring FAQs

Answers to common parent questions about Grade 10 mathematics tutoring in Burlington.

In Ontario, Grade 10 students typically take either MPM2D (Principles of Mathematics - Academic) or MFM2P (Foundations of Mathematics - Applied). MPM2D is the recommended prerequisite for students planning to take Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) and pursue science, engineering, business, or computer science in university.
Quadratics are the single biggest stumbling block in Grade 10. Our tutors help students understand how algebraic equations connect directly to graph shapes, teach systematic factoring algorithms, and demystify vertex transformations so students can solve exam problems quickly and accurately.
Practise factoring, rearranging equations and connecting equations to graphs. MPM2D is the prerequisite for MCR3U; an 80% mark is not a provincial prerequisite. Confirm the appropriate pathway with your school guidance counsellor.
