MPM2D is Grade 10 academic maths. MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U are Grade 12 university-preparation courses with different purposes. They are not interchangeable: the right choice depends on the student’s completed courses and the requirements of their intended program.
The four courses at a glance
- MPM2D — Principles of Mathematics: quadratic relations, linear systems, coordinate geometry and triangle trigonometry.
- MHF4U — Advanced Functions: properties and combinations of functions, including polynomial, rational, logarithmic and trigonometric functions.
- MCV4U — Calculus and Vectors: derivatives and rates of change, plus vectors, lines and planes. Integration is not a core strand in this Ontario course.
- MDM4U — Mathematics of Data Management: probability, statistics and an investigation using data.
Where Grade 9 and Grade 11 fit
The current de-streamed Grade 9 mathematics course is MTH1W, not the former MPM1D course. Ontario’s Grade 10 addendum supports the transition from MTH1W to MPM2D. Families reading older course charts should check the current course calendar with their school.
MCR3U, Grade 11 Functions, is the important middle step for many students planning senior maths. Do not plan a jump straight from MPM2D into a Grade 12 university-preparation course without checking the required intermediate credit.
Check the prerequisites before choosing
- MCR3U requires MPM2D.
- MHF4U accepts MCR3U or MCT4C.
- MHF4U must be completed before, or taken at the same time as, MCV4U.
- MDM4U accepts MCR3U or MCF3M; calculus is not its prerequisite.
Use these course requirements to map the next step, then ask the guidance department to confirm scheduling and any individual pathway questions. A course prerequisite and a university admission requirement are different things.
Does a student need calculus or data management?
Start with the admission page for each specific program and entry year. Record the required course codes, required marks and any additional conditions. If a program specifies MCV4U, do not assume MDM4U can replace it. If a program permits a choice of maths credits, compare that choice with the student’s interests and strengths.
Make a short planning sheet with one row per program. Bring it to a guidance appointment before finalising course selection. This is more useful than choosing a course because friends are taking it or because it is described as universally easier.
Turn a course choice into a learning plan
- Collect a recent test and identify where the reasoning first went wrong, rather than recording only the final mark.
- Separate unfinished algebra skills from difficulty with a new topic. They may need different practice.
- Choose a small set of questions, explain each step aloud and revisit mistakes without looking at the solution.
- Check progress against the chosen skill before increasing the difficulty.
