MTH1W is Ontario’s de-streamed Grade 9 mathematics course. Introduced in September 2021, it replaced the former academic and applied Grade 9 mathematics courses. If an older worksheet or website uses MPM1D, check its topics against the current MTH1W course rather than assuming the course codes are interchangeable.
What does MTH1W cover?
- Mathematical thinking and connections: communicate reasoning, make connections and develop approaches to unfamiliar problems.
- Number: work with number relationships and representations.
- Algebra: use expressions, equations, relationships and coding to investigate mathematics.
- Data: interpret and represent data and consider mathematical models.
- Geometry and measurement: reason about shapes, measures and relationships.
- Financial literacy: use mathematical reasoning in financial situations.
What de-streaming means for a family
The current course provides a common curriculum rather than separate academic and applied Grade 9 mathematics courses. Students may still need different explanations, accommodations, enrichment or practice. Ask the teacher what support is available and which expectations a student is currently working toward. Do not assume one difficult unit determines the student’s future pathway.
Three short readiness checks
- Fractions: calculate 3/4 + 1/2. Rewrite 1/2 as 2/4 to get 5/4, or 1 1/4. If the denominator was also added, review equivalent fractions.
- Equations: solve 3(x − 2) = 15. Divide both sides by 3 to get x − 2 = 5, then add 2: x = 7. Check 3(7 − 2) = 15.
- Linear relationships: a service charges $8 plus $2 per item. Write C = 8 + 2n, where n is the number of items. Five items cost $18. Explain the fixed and changing parts.
Turn a mistake into one focused practice task
Choose the earliest step the student cannot explain. For example, difficulty solving an equation may come from negative-number arithmetic rather than the equation itself. Work through one example together, ask the student to explain a similar example, then revisit it another day. The aim is independent reasoning, not simply finishing more questions.
Questions to ask the teacher
- Which expectation is the current difficulty connected to?
- Can we see an example of a complete explanation?
- Which practice questions are the best starting point?
- What classroom supports or assessment accommodations apply?
- What should we discuss with guidance when choosing Grade 10 mathematics?
How EQAO fits into Grade 9
The Grade 9 mathematics assessment evaluates learning connected to MTH1W. Under the September 2026 Ontario policy update, it counts as the course’s written exam and contributes 20% of the final mark. Use the current official sample assessment and confirm arrangements with the school.
When additional support can help
Consider targeted support when a student repeatedly needs help with the same step, cannot explain an answer after practice, or is missing the foundations for the current unit. Bring recent work to the discussion so support starts with a specific learning need. A tutoring plan should complement classroom instruction.
