Choosing math support starts with a practical question: what does your child need help doing independently? A student who needs consistent arithmetic practice may need a different approach from a student struggling to explain a Grade 11 functions problem.
Mathnasium offers assessment-based math learning plans with instructor support. Kumon uses an individualized progression of worksheets and daily practice. IntelliX Educational Services offers one-to-one personalised tutoring, with support focused on the individual student’s learning needs and goals. This guide compares the three providers to help you decide what to ask before enrolling.
About this comparison: IntelliX Educational Services publishes this guide and offers tutoring. Provider descriptions are based on official Canadian information checked on October 9, 2026. The suitability advice is our editorial assessment, not an independent ranking. Confirm services, availability and terms with the specific centre or tutor.

How Mathnasium works
Mathnasium describes a process that begins with an assessment, followed by a customized learning plan and instruction aimed at understanding mathematics. Its focus includes identifying gaps and developing number sense. A personalized plan does not, by itself, tell you whether a session provides an exclusively dedicated instructor; ask the local centre how sessions operate. Mathnasium Method
Mathnasium also advertises high-school mathematics and homework support. Families considering it for senior Ontario courses should ask about the particular unit, the instructor’s experience and how classroom work fits alongside the learning plan. Mathnasium Canada high-school support
A useful question to ask: “If my child understands today’s homework but has an older algebra gap, how will you decide what to work on first?” The answer should explain how the centre balances the immediate task with the underlying skill.
How Kumon works
Kumon’s approach uses a placement process and small-step worksheets to support independent learning. Its Canadian information describes daily assignments taking approximately 30 minutes per subject. Discuss the expected workload for your child rather than treating that estimate as a fixed requirement for every learner. How Kumon works
Kumon’s mathematics program progresses into high-school-level mathematics. It should not be dismissed as an elementary arithmetic program. Its sequence and your child’s current school unit may nevertheless differ, so ask how the instructor will explain that relationship and measure progress. Kumon’s mathematics program
A useful question to ask: “How will you adjust the starting level and daily work if my child completes questions accurately but becomes frustrated or needs frequent help?” Look for a clear explanation of support and progression.
How IntelliX Educational Services supports students
IntelliX Educational Services offers one-to-one personalised tutoring. A tutor works directly with one student, creating room to examine the student’s reasoning, adapt explanations and focus practice on the areas that need attention.
Our free one-hour assessment identifies current understanding and learning gaps. Parents and students receive a personalised roadmap to guide the next steps. Bring the student’s course code and recent classwork so the discussion can focus on concrete learning needs.
When comparing IntelliX with Mathnasium and Kumon, ask us the same practical questions: how sessions will address the identified gaps, what practice is expected between sessions and how progress will be reviewed. Confirm the tutor’s subject experience, availability and continuity before choosing a schedule.
A useful question to ask: “After explaining a method, how will you check that my child can use it on a new problem without prompting?”
Which option fits your child’s current need?
The following are starting points for a conversation, not predictions about results.
Your child needs a consistent practice routine
If the student understands the concepts but rarely practises independently, compare the structure and home expectations of each option. Ask the student what routine is realistic alongside schoolwork and other commitments. A plan that the family can sustain is more useful than an ambitious schedule that quickly becomes unmanageable.
Your child makes the same conceptual mistake repeatedly
Bring an example of the mistake to the provider. For instance, a student may write (x + 3)² = x² + 9 because they do not understand the multiplication involved. Ask how the instructor would identify that misunderstanding, explain it and check a fresh example. Compare the response rather than assuming that one brand or format always handles conceptual gaps better.
Your child needs help with an Ontario high-school course
Use the actual course code in your enquiry: MTH1W, MPM2D, MCR3U or MHF4U, for example. Bring the teacher’s outline and a recent question. Ask whether the provider can support the required topics and depth of explanation, and how it will balance current work with missing foundations.
Our Ontario math course comparison can help you prepare those questions.
Your child wants enrichment
Ask what “getting ahead” means in practice. Will the student encounter new concepts, solve unfamiliar problems or explain ideas in greater depth? Progress should be visible in the work, not only in completing more pages or moving through labels faster.
Compare the complete cost and commitment
Get a current written quote from the specific centre or tutor. This guide does not give a universal price because an accurate comparison requires the actual program and terms being offered.
Ask each provider about:
- The total monthly or term cost and any assessment, registration or materials charges.
- The number and length of sessions included.
- Expected practice outside sessions.
- Cancellation, absence, rescheduling and pause policies.
- Instructor continuity and how questions between sessions are handled.
- When progress will be reviewed and what evidence you will receive.
Compare the full commitment, including travel and home practice. A monthly fee and an hourly tutoring rate are not directly comparable until you know what each includes.
Use a simple progress check
Agree on one specific goal before beginning. “Solve two-step equations independently and explain each step” is easier to evaluate than “be more confident at math.” Keep an example of the student’s starting work.
At an agreed review point, try a fresh question on the same skill. Can the student start without prompting, explain the method and check the answer? If not, ask what the provider will change. This is a way to review the plan, not a deadline by which every student should achieve the same result.
