Grade 11 Physics (SPH3U) has a reputation in Ontario high schools as one of the steepest academic learning curves. Unlike biology or general science, which rely heavily on descriptive concepts, physics is applied mathematical modeling. Students must extract given variables from text, sketch free-body force diagrams, resolve vector components, and select the correct algebraic formula under exam time limits.
The Five Core Curriculum Strands of SPH3U
- Unit 1: Kinematics: Distinguishing scalars from vectors; calculating displacement, average velocity, and acceleration; analyzing position-time and velocity-time graphs; solving 1D and uniform acceleration motion problems using the 5 Big Kinematics Equations.
- Unit 2: Forces & Dynamics: Drawing free-body diagrams (FBDs); Newton's First (Inertia), Second (F_net = ma), and Third (Action-Reaction) Laws of Motion; static and kinetic friction forces (F_f = μ·F_N); universal gravitation (F_g = G·m₁m₂/r²).
- Unit 3: Energy & Society: Mechanical work (W = F·Δd·cosθ); kinetic energy (E_k = 0.5·m·v²); gravitational potential energy (E_g = m·g·h); law of conservation of energy; thermal energy; power (P = W/Δt); and industrial energy efficiency.
- Unit 4: Waves & Sound: Mechanical vibrations; transverse and longitudinal wave mechanics; wave equation (v = f·λ); sound intensity and speed of sound in air; Doppler effect; resonance in open and closed air columns; acoustic wave interference.
- Unit 5: Electricity & Magnetism: Electrostatics and Coulomb's Law; electric potential and current; Ohm's Law (V = I·R); series and parallel DC circuit analysis; Kirchhoff's Voltage and Current Laws; right-hand rules for magnetic fields, solenoids, and motor principles.
The 5 Big Kinematics Equations Cheat Sheet
- Equation 1 (No displacement): v₂ = v₁ + a·Δt
- Equation 2 (No acceleration): Δd = [(v₁ + v₂) / 2] · Δt
- Equation 3 (No final velocity): Δd = v₁·Δt + 0.5·a·(Δt)²
- Equation 4 (No initial velocity): Δd = v₂·Δt - 0.5·a·(Δt)²
- Equation 5 (No time): (v₂)² = (v₁)² + 2·a·Δd
- Standard Gravity Constant: Near Earth's surface, acceleration due to gravity is taken as g = 9.80 m/s² downwards.
Why Free-Body Diagrams (FBDs) Make or Break Unit 2
In Unit 2 (Forces), the most common error is jumping into formulas before drawing an accurate Free-Body Diagram. Teachers in the Halton, Peel, and Toronto district boards deduct marks if forces are not explicitly labeled with vector arrows (F_g, F_N, F_app, F_f). Setting up equations along the x-axis (F_net,x = m·a_x) and y-axis (F_net,y = m·a_y = 0) is the only reliable method to solve inclined plane and friction problems correctly.
