Grade 10 Science
Grade 10 Science
SNC2D & SNC2P
The Grade 10 Science curriculum in the Halton District School Board (HDSB) follows the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines and offers two distinct pathways:
- Academic (SNC2D)
- Applied (SNC2P)
Both pathways provide foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space science, preparing students for senior-level science courses and post-secondary pathways.
1. SNC2D – Science, Grade 10, Academic
Focus:
Enhances understanding of scientific concepts through theoretical and practical approaches.
Key Topics:
- Biology: Human cells and body systems
- Chemistry: Chemical reactions, including acid-base reactions
- Physics: Forces that affect climate and climate change
- Earth and Space Science: Interaction of light and matter
Skills Developed:
- Scientific inquiry
- Critical thinking
- Application of scientific principles to real-world situations
Prerequisite:
- Successful completion of Grade 9 Science (SNC1D or SNC1P)
2. SNC2P – Science, Grade 10, Applied
Focus:
Applies scientific concepts to everyday contexts and practical applications.
Key Topics:
- Biology: Human cells and body systems
- Chemistry: Chemical reactions and their practical applications
- Physics: Electrical applications and energy transformations
- Earth and Space Science: Earth’s dynamic climate and environmental issues
Skills Developed:
- Hands-on experimentation
- Problem-solving
- Applying science to daily life
Prerequisite:
- Successful completion of Grade 9 Science (SNC1D or SNC1P)

HDSB Science Department Resources
The HDSB Science Department offers engaging science programs from Grades 9–12, including biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science. These programs emphasize curiosity, critical thinking, and inquiry-based learning to prepare students for post-secondary pathways and real-world problem-solving.
Additional Information
- Course Selection: Students should consult academic advisors to choose the appropriate pathway based on interests, strengths, and goals
- Assessment: Both SNC2D and SNC2P include assignments, lab work, projects, and tests to evaluate skills and knowledge.
- Pathways:
- SNC2D? → Prepares students for Grade 11 University preparation science courses (SCH3U, SBI3U, SPH3U)
- SNC2P? → Prepares students for Grade 11 College preparation science courses
